Grainger Gallery presents Andrew Antoniou’s “Props, Masks & Magic,” which explores the acclaimed artist’s love of theatre which has given him “the format of the stage and its accompanying language of props, sets and costume on which to compose these characters that represent aspects of the psyche.”

Andrew has a long association with Canberra, having taught at the Canberra School of Art from the early 1990s, and is held in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia and Canberra Museum and Gallery. This will be his first show in Canberra in 15 years.

Learn something new today as Madelyn Shaw presents her 2022 National Library Fellowship research into the global wool trade.

This presentation will examine wool’s vital role as a military resource from the American Civil War through the Korean War, the last conflict in which wool was a major strategic imperative. It is a trans-national story, long fragmented and obscured within various national histories At its heart are the close, often contentious, ties among Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. But it also reveals how British control of nearly half the world’s wool during two world wars drove ‘have-not’ nations—the US, Germany, Japan, Italy—to search for substitutes, and eventually, the synthetic fibres which threaten our environment today.

Collaborating with Megalo Print Studio and running at The Mixing Room Gallery at Thor’s Hammer, the artists exhibiting in Carved were invited to explore a range of salvaged and recycled timbers to develop new works in print media. The Mabo v Queensland (No. 2) decision was handed down in the High Court of Australia on 3 June 1992. ‘Mabo’—as it has come to be known—altered the foundation of land law in Australia. It provided official recognition of the inherent rights of Indigenous Australians to their traditional lands. The National Library of Australia holds an extensive collection of material relating to the Mabo decision and to its lead applicant, Edward Koiki Mabo.

To celebrate this anniversary, join Dr Terri Janke for a special lecture as she reflects on the effects Mabo decision 30 years on.

The Fuse Glass Prize finalists will come to Canberra Glassworks in an exhibition that showcases the skill and creativity of glass making today. The Prize is a non-acquisitive biennial prize for Australian and New Zealand glass artists and the richest in Australasia. Alexey Botvinov is one of the most exceptional pianists of our time. Currently based in Germany in exile and is now touring to raise money for family and friends in Ukraine.

He’s regarded by many to be a specialist in the music of Rachmaninov and is the only pianist in the world to have performed Bach‘s  ‘Goldberg Variations’ more than 300 times on stage. To date, Alexey has performed in over 45 countries, though this will be his first trip to Australia.
